Routine Maintenance for your computer!
(keep spyware and viruses out and keep the system and browser running right)
Use an anti-virus program that you feel confident with and that you can operate.
( Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast! recommended)
Scan the system manually at least once a month
Update virus definitions at least weekly
Set automatic scanning, but double-check any “automatic” settings
Windows has a built in firewall- be sure it’s on.
Use anti-spyware program(s) that you feel confident with and that you can operate
(MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware,Spybot S&D) to scan and remove bad objects
at least weekly.
Check for updates while online, before scanning.
Go to Start | Programs | Windows Update every week or two and scan for updates.
Set for automatic updating at time when computer is usually on.
Be sure to install critical updates and security patches
Manage Add-ons in browser. Disable any undesirable or unneeded add-ons.
Control Panel | Internet options | Programs tab | Manage add-ons button
| disable undesirable add-ons (no name or damaged).
Remove temporary files in the browser
Control Panel | Internet Options | General tab | Browsing history | Delete button |
Temporary Internet Files | Delete files button
Run the System Configuration Utility and manage items starting up automatically,
especially the Startup tab items.
Start | Run | type in: msconfig, then hit ok or Enter key. Startup tab,
uncheck unwanted/unknown items
(disable all and reboot if system is running very poorly).
Defrag and error-check every month or so. Necessary to keep the computer running well.
Double-click My Computer | right click Drive C: | Properties | Tools and
run defragmentation utility and error checking (next reboot ok)
Clean out unnecessary files every month or so- Disk Cleanup (button)
